Why is Team Chimbo going to Ecuador?
"Because It's There" was the response George Leigh Mallory gave when asked why he wanted to climb Everest.
The three of us have a serious passion for altitude. We love the summits and we love the adventures! Climbing is like no other sport. It takes more both physically and mentally to conquer mountains, than anything we know. Suffering through freezing temperatures, eating terrible trail food, and hiking while every muscle screams for you to stop, isn't always fun. The summit views, the alpenglow sunsets, and the laughter shared between good friends make all the pain and suffering worth it. The mountains have a lot to teach us. They teach us about ourselves and about teamwork, about beauty and grace, and so much more. We will climb the mountains not just because they are they, but because God put them there.
Ecuador has 9 peaks over 5000 meters (16,404 feet) tall. It's summits range from very technical to day hikes. The moderate climate of Ecuador makes it a great place to learn and improve high altitude mountaineering skills.
Some interesting facts about the peaks of Ecuador:
  • The peak of Chimborazo is the furthest point from the center of the earth. (Because the Earth is bigger around at the Equator)
  • Cotopaxi is the world's highest active volcano!
  • Cayambe is the highest point on the Equator.
